Newsletter T1 Week 7

Hello and welcome to the first newsletter for 2013.  It is hard to believe that we are in week 7 already – and still only just halfway through the term.  It has been a really busy start to the year for hostel students and staff , but we are very pleased with how things have started and with the encouraging signs of a very positive year ahead.

Most satisfying was to begin the year with a full hostel.  23 new students began at the hostel this year – and with strong numbers in years 9-11 the roll for the hostel looks very strong for the next few years.  This will be REALLY important for parents who have younger siblings wanting to attend the hostel next year, read more on that in our enrolment section below.  While on the subject of new enrolments I’ll mention that Brent Russell, our two head students, and myself spent time at the Wanaka Show last week flying the flag for your school and in particular our hostel.  It was good to meet so many of our parents at our site, and also have the chance to see the show as a whole.  Rural students and farming parents make up a huge proportion of our intake.  This excellent showcase gave us a real chance to share the best of your sector.

Many students have been doing us proud over the term.  I’m really impressed with our cricket and softball players.  They’ve been working hard these long hot summer days and getting good results.  It is great to see rugby pre-season training underway for most teams. Please see attached notices regarding Rugby and Hockey for parents of students in these sports.  Musical rehearsals are also consuming the time of many of our students after school and evenings … so Look out for Disco Inferno at the end of Term.  Notable achievements this term include Lauren Ross selected for the National Secondary School’s Choir, Emily McGimpsey winner of the U18 women’s freestyle Kayaking National Championship.  Also deserving a mention for hardwork and representative success are Kia Wales for Athletics, Romy Wales for Adventure Racing, Ashleigh Glanfield, Macaela Turfus and Alex Stuart for Rowing.

All students have enjoyed an action packed start to the year.  See the pics below for some of the highlights.
