Greetings to all hostel parents, who will have noted with some irony how much the summer weather improved once students were back at school and the summer holidays over! The start of the term has raced along and with workday, athletics sports and swimming sports all completed by the end of today – students will be settling into their normal routines for the remainder of this long term. Many are involved in their summer sports, particularly our rowers and softballers, and pre-season training for the winter sports is already well under way. I want to remind parents that all hostel students are expected to participate in sporting or cultural activities while at the hostel. This is not only an important opportunity for learning from participating in these activities – but also ensure that hostel life is balanced with a range of academic, sporting and cultural challenges.
The hostel has started in good heart with 10 new students, 7 of them in Year 9. Some of those students are pictured above. If any parents of Yr 9 students would like copies of photos of students on their first day of school please let me know and I’ll email them to you.
News in Brief:
No Teacher Only Day Term One: There is no Teacher Only Day associated with the Otago Anniversary Holiday this term as incorrectly stated in the hostel important dates notice publish last year. The hostel will close for all students on Fri 21 March and re-open for all students on Tuesday 25 March. The Important info page has been updated and this can also be downloaded and re-printed if necessary from the tab above.
Barbera Fulcher our hostel cook is away on sick leave for few weeks. Her role is being covered internally. We wish her well for a speedy recovery.
Mr Simon Tregonning has joined Bev’s team of hostel supervisors. Simon has taken up a position as a Maths teacher at Dunstan High School and has already fitted in very well with the hostel team and students alike. A big welcome to Simon – and I’m sure those students stumped on their Maths homework will make the best use of his availability.
We have completed a lot of work around the hostel over the summer period. Feel free to sign-in with the duty supervisor and have a look around next time you call in.
SOME IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR PARENTS:
It is important for student safety that all parents are aware of the hostel leave procedures and follow them at all times when requesting leave from the hostel for their sons and daughters. This way we always know who is responsible for students and when. The leave procedures are available for download here. An important part of this process is accurately communicating to us when the students will be leaving and returning to the hostel and how they will be traveling.
To aid in this process I have developed a leave application form which can easily be completed on-line and contains all of the information required by us. This form is available online here, or by clicking the “online forms” tab at the top of the hostelive website. It is available now and will be trialled for this term. Alternatively you can email us or write to us requesting leave. However, if all of the information required to ensure student safety is not supplied in writing, I will not be able to process leave requests until that information is supplied. All leave requests for weekend leave must be received by Thursday Lunchtime. Requests received after this time may not be able to be processed in time for your son or daughter to have leave that weekend.
Please help us ensure that leave processing runs smoothly, and that students are safe by observing the leave procedures and timeline. If anyone would like me to help them use the online leave form (its easy – I promise) just give me a call and I’ll be happy to talk you through it.
Casual Weekend Boarding
We make a casual boarding opportunity available to five day students so that students can participate in sporting and cultural activities and school trips away that occur on the weekend. It is not appropriate to use this facility to aid students social lives. Please respect the purpose of the casual weekend boarding arrangements when considering weekend plans for your son/daughter. Please note that the deadline for email requests for Casual Boarding is 12pm on Thursday. Again please email all relevant information including arrival/departure dates and times and reason for the casual boarding request. Please also help us by ensuring five day students do not arrive unannounced at the hostel during the weekend. As always – if the need to call-in to collect something does arise, please ensure you contact the duty supervisor and sign-in with them.
Thank you for your support in ensuring our hostel procedures run smoothly for the safety and well-being of all students.
