Term 2 Update #2

Britt Smith and Cole Mackie arrive at the Formal.

Golden Globes a Winner

The DHS “Golden Globes” formal was held on saturday night and I watched the senior hostel students arrive in all their finery for a Hollywood themed night.  They looked amazing and I am told the dance went very well.  A big thank you to many parents who made the trip to ensure their hostel students could have a special night of celebration.

Local Meetings Coming Up

Brent Russell and I will be holding a our normal series of meetings around the region beginning in early June.  We look forward to the opportunity to meet current and prospective parents in this small and interactive setting.  If you are aware of any parents in your district considering boarding for their child – please discuss the Dunstan option with them and let them know about the upcoming meetings.  Don’t forget to mark the date of the nearest one to you on your calendar now.

New Rules Relating to Aerosols

Junior Boys have been informed of new rules relating to use and possession of aerosol based products (such as Lynx deodorant) in the Junior Block.  I have reason to believe there is the potential for misuse, and therefore student safety concerns with these products.  I have decided that year nine and ten boys will not be permitted to have these items in their rooms at the hostel.  I look forward to your support in this area – particularly in ensuring that students are provided with roll-on or stick type deodorants.  Thank you.

Winter Weather and Illness.

As the weather cools, students become increasingly susceptible to cold and flu, which normally leads to time away from the hostel and school.  Please help us to prevent illness and the inconvenience of students needing to spend time at home this winter by ensuring that students have adequate warm clothing, including uniform jerseys and jackets, and stressing to them the importance of wearing them in cold weather.
A reminder that it is hostel policy that students who are sick are sent home, and parents are expected to be available to be contacted and to come and collect sick students from the hostel if necessary.

Winter Sport and Casual Boarding

With winter sports in full swing many five day students are requiring Casual Boarding during the weekend.  A reminder of the main points of our process for this:

  • Written request from parents received by 5pm of the Thursday Prior.
  • Request to detail arrival/departure times from the hostel and activity to be undertaken.

Full details of the casual boarding process and costs can be found on our downloads page.

Activity Fee for 7 Day Boarders

There will be no activity fee charged to 7 day parents this term as the amount used last term was very little and students are planning more activities during winter months.

Welcome to Term 2

A big welcome back to the hostel for Term 2.  I hope you all were able to make the most of some lovely settled weather wherever you were over the holidays.  Our netball camp went well over the break with 50 girls attending from all over Otago with the hirage again helping to offset boarding fees.

We are getting ready for a busy term with a huge academic focus as well as winter sport starting up.  Just some reminders as we head into a broken first week of Term 2.  ANZAC day falls on Wednesday.  The school and the hostel will be closed.  Any seven day parents who are having difficulty making other arrangements for their son or daughter should email us to advise so that we can make suitable arrangements at the hostel.

We look forward to seeing most of you back on Monday.  There will be someone at the hostel from 5pm on Sunday for 7 day students returning then (remember – this must also be pre-arranged), although we have a big night of Staff Training on Sunday, so please make sure that you have contacted us by email regarding a suitable arrival time.  Enjoy your last few days of the school holidays.

Kind regards,

Happy Holidays and ANZAC Day Info

As the school holidays approach I would like to take the opportunity to wish students and parents an enjoyable time together – especially as our weather forecast looks like more of the fine settled stuff we have been getting.

A reminder that all students will need to leave their rooms empty, clean and tidy for our Netball Development Camp visitors during the holidays.  Some material can be left in the Prep room over the holidays – but five day students should ensure all clothing and linen is returned home for some TLC.

A few parents have asked me about ANZAC day.  This is a public holiday and so the hostel is closed from Tuesday night till Thursday morning.  (See Important Dates for 2012) For some seven day students this may prove difficult to manage.  Could I encourage parents and students alike to seek alternative accommodation during this time if at all possible.  If any seven day parents are truely stuck – please e-mail me and we will arrange something from our end if needed.  I would like to thank the many five day parents who already welcome some of our seven day students into their homes during holidays and away weekends. I would encourage any parents who have not thought of inviting friends of their sons or daughter who live along way from the hostel into their home, to consider if such an opportunity exists over ANZAC day.  It is another healthy and rewarding aspect of hostel life.
